Proposed British Standard - Establishing Trees in the Landscape

Up to 25% of newly planted amenity trees fail to establish and reach a semi-mature state. BSi has proposed a new British Standard BS8545, a code of practice for trees from nursery to landscape. The standard will encompass tree production, dispatch, storage, transplanting and maintenance/aftercare until established in the landscape. The standard will aim to recognise this as a conjoined process rather than the disjointed one that it currently is, to increase the success rate of tree planting and establishment.

The standards drafting group lead by Keith Sacre (Barcham Trees) has prepared a brief questionnaire as its first step in its on going consultation process. The questionnaire is currently live at the following link and will take approximately 5 minutes to complete. BS8545 Questionnaire.

The Arb Show 2011

The Arboricultural Associations annual Arb Show is being held at the Bathurst Estate, Cirencester, on Friday and Saturday 10 - 11 June 2011. Its the countries largest arboricultural trade show with climbing demonstrations, education events and CPD and over 70 exhibitors selling an array of equipment from climbing kit to MEWP and surveying tools to chippers.

ForestXplorer - Forestry Commission iPhone App

The Forestry Commission (FC) England has launched a free iPhone App to find your local woodlands, download trail maps and learn about the trees with an easy to use tree identifier.

App users can search for sites by event or activity, or find basic information such as opening times, things to do, directions and contact details for Forestry Commission Forest Parks.

The app is both fun and educational and includes a photo gallery of common trees found in the UK with unique computer generated tree illustrations. This app allows you to identify trees by their bark, seed/fruit and leaf form.

BS5837:2005 Trees in Relation to Construction Recommendation - Consultation

The British Standard Institute (BSi) have released BS5837:2005 Trees in Relation to Construction Recommendations for public consultation. This is a first revision of the Standard following its release in 2005. Trees People and the Built Environment Research Conference

Urban Tree Research Conference hosted by Institute of Chartered Foresters (ICF) is nearly upon us and is to be held on 13th & 14th April 2011 in Edgbaston Birmingham. The conference will be attended by a variety of industries including arboriculture, forestry, landscape architecture, environmental consultancy and architects to name but a few, with nearly 400 delegates confirmed from the UK and overseas.

The conference is a 2 day event which addresses how urban trees and woodlands have been promoted up the political agenda both at government and local levels. The conference will explore:

Institute of Chartered Foresters Registered Consultant

BS3998:2010 - Tree Work Recommendations has been published. The standard provides general guide in relation to tree works and the management options for established trees (including veteran trees, pollards and hedgerows). Tis full revision of the standard takes into consideration all aspects of current law and legislation directly and indirectly affecting trees.

Congratulations - Peter Wharton MICFor

We are delighted to announce that Peter Wharton MICFor, has successfully passed his Professional Membership Examination to the Institute of Chartered Foresters (ICF).

Peter had being working towards this for 3 years and following a rigorous interview in Edinburgh last month got the very welcome news. Peter said "the past few years and specifically few months have been a real test to complete the written work and also in preparation for the final interview. I think specifically my wife and close family will testify to the stress and amount of work which has been put into achieving this."

Peter now intends to continue developing his professional skills as a Chartered Arboriculturist and hopefully take a more active role in the ICF. Once again our congratulations Peter, this is a fine way to cap another successful year.

Planning Inspectorate Learn Lessons from TPO Appeals

The planning inspectorate have recently released a briefing letter to Councilsfollowing a review of Tree Preservation Order (TPO) appeals in the past couple of years. The letter sets out problems that have arrisen at appeal which should have been resolved prior to appeal. It has found that there have been a number of common errors across Councils. There are a total of 12 common issues which have been highlighted from the Councils Decision and Conditions through to unclear descriptions of works which have been accpted.

Tree Preservation Orders: Consultation Document

The Department for Communities and Local Government has launched a new consultation document for tree preservation order entitled Tree Preservation Order: Proposals for Streamlining - Consultation.

The proposals seek to consolidate the legal provisions within the regulations and tree preservation orders (TPO) in England into one set of new regulations.

It is also proposed to introduce revisions to streamline the TPO system and make it a fairer system and simpler for tree owners to use. Additionally it will also reduce the administrative burden on Locla Planning Authorities.

Wharton Arboriculture Award 5 Year Tree Surveying and Consultancy Services Contract

Wharton Arboricultural (WAL), has been awarded a 5 year tree surveying and consultancy contract, working in partnership with Futures Housing Group (FHG).

FHG manages approximately 8,500 properties and open space for Amber Valley Housing and Daventry & District Housing. WAL will be commencing the inital survey during the winter 2010.

4 Peaks Challenge 2010 - Completed

Congratulations to Peter Wharton of Wharton Arboriuclture and 7 friends for completing the 4 Peaks Challenge in 42 hours 35 minutes, including the driving time between mountains, which was well within the 48 hours. The team all ended up with sore legs and blisters, but it was definitely worth it, knowing that the money was going to MacMillan Cancer Support. As a team they have raised a grand total of £8,296.67. This is a great achievement by all involved.

4 Peaks Challenge 2010

Peter Wharton of Wharton Arboriculture and seven close friends are preparing for the 4 Peaks Challenge which is to be undertaken in 2010. The challenge involves climbing the four highest peaks in Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scafell Pike), Wales (Snowdon) and Ireland (Carrantuohill), this amounts to approximately 14,500ft of climbing and driving 1,000 miles all within 48 hours timescale.

Our chosen charity is Macmillan Cancer Support charity (charity number 261017) and as a team we have set the target of raising a minimum of £10,000.
